NSSF, MASTERCARD TEAM UP TO BOOST DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION OF WOMEN FOUNDED ENTERPRISES IN A MULTI-BILLION INVESTMENT ROUND

NSSF earmarks Shs. Seven(7) Billion for small, starting enterprises

independent.co.ug, November 25, 2022 | Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has unveiled a program under which it will acquire a shareholding in small and starting enterprises, as a way of enabling them to acquire “patient capital”. In partnership with Mastercard Foundation, the Fund has earmarked more than Shillings 7.6 billion as seed funding for 100 indigenous women-owned businesses under its NSSF Hi-innovator program.

File Photo/Courtesy: NSSF has earmarked more than Shillings 7.6 billion as seed funding for 100 indigenous women-owned businesses under its NSSF Hi-innovator program.

The NSSF Hi-Innovator is a program that is aimed at supporting early-stage, small and growing enterprises mainly owned by women and youth over a five-year period. NSSF used the ongoing Uganda Innovation Week to announce its 3rd funding round under the program dubbed; NSSF Hi-Innovator Women Accelerator.

Patrick Ayota, the NSSF Deputy Managing Director said that the funding is aimed at giving women entrepreneurs an opportunity to improve their business skills and grow their businesses whilst readying them for future investor funding. He encouraged Uganda’s business people to adopt partnerships in business because then, the risks are spread and this makes the enterprise stronger.

The program aims to empower 132,000 youths across the country through 120 innovation hubs, and targets 92,000 women, employers, and employees. Studies show that Uganda is the second country in the world with the highest percentage of women-owned enterprises. However, these are mainly small and low profit-making compared to those owned by men.

Ayota says the NSSF initiative is out to change this. According to him, the main reason why Ugandan enterprises collapse as soon as they are started is that Ugandans have no patience and want immediate profit.

The NSSF job-creation program is also expected to serve as a sustainability project for the savings scheme. Ayota says if the current trend of fee jobs being created continues for at least 16 years, the retirement savings industry could collapse.

“Whereas Uganda is ranked the second country in the world with the highest number of women business owners (38.4%), according to a 2021 Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, a 2019 World Bank report stated that women-owned micro enterprises in Uganda generate 30% lower profits than their male counterparts,” he said.

The Fund will provide 75 million Shillings as seed funding for each woman-owned business and this funding round targets at least 100 businesses. NSSF will then have the option of converting their financial contribution into equity or shareholding of an initial 6 percent, which will enable them to maintain close contact and monitor their investment.

The NSSF Hi-Innovator Women Accelerator is open to all women entrepreneurs in all economic sectors across the country until the end of January 2023. Adrian Mulindwa Bukenya, the Mastercard Foundation Country Head said their intervention is part of the foundation’s vision of accessing people to more dignified jobs.

“Our vision is to play a catalytic role in supporting partners to spur change built on a shared vision and values, equity, and accountability. Our approach is holistic, emphasizing resilience and coordination among local implementing partners,” he said.

This is the reason they joined the Hi-Innovator Women Accelerator, to support ‘highly impactful and scalable small and growing businesses” to access seed capital and technical support for their businesses.

In addition to the seed funding, the selected businesses will have unlimited access to customized business courses on the Hi-innovator Business Academy – an online learning platform, with tailored technical support, mentorship, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities.

Applicants will first receive entrepreneurial skill training through the Hi-innovator business academy, then pitch to an expert panel of judges. It is through pitching that successful businesses will be selected. To join, interested female entrepreneurs will apply via https://hiinnovatorbusinessacademy.nssfug.org/.

Explaining the criteria, Richard Zulu, the Outbox Team Lead, said that participating businesses must have at least half female ownership or 70 percent or more women in top management, and must be legally operating in Uganda for at least two years, among others. On the strict criteria, Zulu explained that it is aimed at the strength of the company and the vision of the entrepreneurs before they are taken on.

Until now, NSSF has been known for investing in government treasuries, large real estate projects, and companies listed on the stock markets in East Africa.

CONSERVE YOUR CASH, LEASE A BRAND NEW GRAND CHEROKEE - MODEL 2023; FROM ZERO – 30% DOWN PAYMENT, UP TO 96 MONTHLY RENTALS AND MORE OFFERS

The 2023 Grand Cherokee is a multifaceted SUV

What you need to know:

monitor.co.ug, November 24, 2022 | We are coming to the end of 2022. However, some vehicle manufacturers are not letting the year end without new releases. The latest manufacturer to dance to this tune is 81-year old American automaker, Jeep, after recently releasing the all new Jeep Grand Cherokee Long wheelbase 2023 model.

Unlike its predecessor, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L is the first three – row version of the Jeep family’s 4X4 SUV and offers more space, luxury and off-road capability.

It comes in three trims; the limited 4x4 seven-seater, the overland 4X4 seven-seater and the summit reserve 4X4 six-seater, with two seat first class arrangement in the second row seating area.

Features

Running on a 3,600cc V6 petrol engine, with stop/start fuel saving technology and an efficient eight-speed transmission combined with a powerful 4x4 system, the L version is bigger than its predecessor. It does not come with any diesel options due to the phase out of more polluting diesel in favour of future electronic vehicle technology. However, its off-road capability was never compromised. The 4X4 system distributes power depending on the road conditions, leading to additional savings on fuel consumption.

Performance-wise, the SUV can be driven through any terrain. The ground clearance is adjusted by a button (overland and summit reserve models only). When pressed, the closed loop air suspension system allows you increase the vehicle’s ground clearance to comfortably drive it even on the most uneven off roads.

Safety features

According to Zepha Matovu, the Spear Motors Limited, Sales Manager, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Long wheelbase model is fitted with a 360 degrees camera that allows you to see the surrounding of the vehicle to avoid accidents from all directions, even side impacts. It also comes with a lane departure system that helps you to stay in your lane to prevent lane departure crashes, especially when you aim to overtake simultaneously with the motorist behind you, or the one from the oncoming traffic lane. This Jeep also comes with impact airbags in all doors, including those for all passengers.

In case of a serious head-on collision, the Cherokee comes with a strong protective metal barrier around the engine compartment area to prevent the engine from pushing the steering to the chest of the driver.

It also has the brake assist system, which allows the car to brake by itself, for example when something suddenly jumps in front of the car.

The car also has a setting to warn you when you are fatigued or dozing. For example, if you are driving out of your lane, the steering will automatically turn and take you back to your lane. When you attempt to get out of  your lane without indicating, the vehicle will warn you audibly to keep moving in a straight direction and will only turn without any alarm when you use the indicators.

Speeds

Cruising at a maximum speed of 240km/hr, the Cherokee is purely fuel reliant but with an improvement from the previous model in form of performance and fuel consumption. For example, for urban drives, one litre covers approximately eight kilometres, and approximately 12km on the highway, with a full tank carrying 96 litres.

“It has a digital heads-up display to enable you see your speed without looking down and notifies you of map directions or incoming call alerts to keep you from using  the phone while driving. You can also control the phone using the steering,” Matovu explains.

Smart screen features

The other fascinating form of new technology aboard this car is the wireless phone charging system and a 10.1-inch ultra HD screen. The screen also shows you the fastest route to use, road terrain ahead and the time it will take to get to your destination.

Apart from the radio, you can also control the air conditioning system and the interior ambience lights on the smart screen. It also has a co-driver’s 10.25 inch screen, with the option of watching something completely different from that on the main screen. When driving at night, the Cherokee is fitted with a night vision camera to help you see the distance ahead, while also bringing objects closer.

Unlike your car that has a pushable gear lever for shifting into different functions, the long wheelbase model Cherokee has a turning knob, similar to that of a radio, where you shift to parking, reverse, neutral and drive modes. The driving mirror can also serve as a camera to monitor what the passengers at the rear are doing.

It has numerous buttons on the roof between the driver and co-driver’s seats for, among other purposes, opening the boot and the sun roof. It also has McIntosh music system speakers well distributed on all doors, and battery powered buttons that power the seats to massage you. You can also cool the seats or make them warm by pressing a button. It is also a remote start SUV, meaning that you can start it while outside.

Cost

According to Matovu, the cost of a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee Long wheelbase 2023 model ranges between $150,000 (Shs555m) and $185,000 (Shs684m), depending on the edition you choose.

Jeep Grand Cherokee models

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV that is sold in five trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland and Summit. The trims generally follow a typical ladder structure, with the upper levels adding more features to those on the trim below. The exception is the Trailhawk, which has unique off-road upgrades not found on other models.

MAKERERE UNIVERSITY PROACTIVE STANCE TO RELEASE ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS FROM CIRCA ITS INCEPTION APPLAUDED BY ALUMNI AND OTHERS

Makerere starts two-week public fair to issue out uncollected transcripts, certificates

observer.ug, John Musinguzi, November 08, 2022 | Makerere University has dedicated two weeks to handle issues of uncollected academic transcripts and certificates, going as far back to the 1950s.

File Photo/Courtesy: Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, Academic Registrar, Makerere University.

From October 8-21, 2022, 9 am to 4 pm, including Saturdays, the department of the academic registrar, all the 10 colleges of the university, its affiliate Makerere University Business School (Mubs) and the directorate of research and graduate studies will serve any alumnus with issues related to transcripts and certificates. All services have been brought under one tent at the Freedom Square.

Academic registrar Prof Buyinza Mukadasi said though every student is a unique case with a personal file and particular curriculum, some students get admitted but do not register themselves; so, they lack a file tracing their journey at the university.

TESTIMONIALS

Some students prefer just to pick a testimonial indicating that they were once at Makerere and never bother to come back for their transcript or certificate. According to Mukadasi, normally, such students still have uncleared obligations with the university, such as pending fees or lost books, among others.

“I should warn any employer not to rely on a testimonial because it is a partial academic document; even a transcript is partial. It is a certificate that shows one completed all obligations with the institution,” Mukadasi explained.

Tom Otim, the deputy registrar, examinations, transcripts and certificates, said there are more uncollected certificates than transcripts because some employees get satisfied with the presentation of just a transcript. The certificates are as many as 100,000 while the transcripts are about 2,000 only.

“We are running out of room to keep these certificates. Sadly, some owners died before collecting them. However, if someone shows us proof that he or she is the administrator of the estate of the deceased, we will give them the uncollected academic documents,” Otim said.

Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said the above figures do not portray a crisis situation for the university, given that the university has more than 400,000 alumni. He explained that the exercise had been embarked on as part of the activities of marking Makerere’s 100 years of existence and further safeguarding the integrity and image of the university.

NEW ACADEMIC MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

Nawangwe explained that in the past, Makerere had reached a level of efficiency whereby transcripts would be given on or before graduation day. However, a problem came up in the last two years when a new academic management information system (ACMIS) was set up for all public universities. The information on Makerere’s system had to be uploaded to the new general system. This came with some technical challenges, especially as the new system had to be implemented while being improved simultaneously.

Otim said the new information system captures the student’s curriculum and biodata and any slight mistake in any of them makes the system reject the student. Makerere University Endowment Fund is also at the public fair venue to record alumni for inclusion on their MakAdvance system record of alumni in case they are not captured there yet.

Nawangwe said the tediousness of clearing with the university, which previously required visiting 10 places such as University hospital and the university police station, has been curtailed. One has to visit only two places for clearance: the library and the finance department.

ONLINE CLEARANCE

He pledged to make online clearance possible in the very near future. He also said certification and verification of academic documents at Makerere can now be handled within a day.

Alumni are expected to come with their proper identification (national ID, work ID, driving licence or university ID), biodata form (containing O and A-level certificates, diploma, mature age certificate, and admission information), and those who have not yet cleared come with their original clearance form. Mukadasi urged anyone with any academic issue to utilise this public fair and get satisfaction.

“Today is a special occasion in the history of this university. This is the first-ever public fair. We have assembled an interdepartmental task force; we have all the 10 college registrars here, Mubs academic registrar and the directorate for ICT Support all under this one roof. We are the custodians of all academic records. We remain committed to our ideals; let whoever has any outstanding issue, come and have it handled. Some people were not aware that their documents were printed; others had other issues; we have resolved to do away with this matter once and forever. Moreover, we are also in the midst of preparing records for the next graduation in February.”

SOBRIETY PREVAILS AS AN EACOP LEANING RESOLUTION IS PASSED BY CPA-EU PARLIAMENT

Uganda Celebrates as CPA-EU Parliament Finally Backs EACOP

chimpreports.com, November 02, 2022 |The Caribbean, Pacific-European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly (CPA-EU) has made an amendment in one of its resolutions on climate change, which is being described as a greenlight for Uganda and Tanzania’s East African Crude Oil Pipeline Project.

The CPA-EU Assembly, which brings together an equal number of elected MPs from the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states and Members of the European Parliament, today made changes to “Operative Clause 5” of its Resolution on the Global Challenges of Climate Change Cooperation for Adaptation and Migration.

The Resolution was passed ahead of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled for November 18th in Egypt, and initially called for a ban on all new oil exploration projects.

It read in part, “…achieving the 1.5 ° C target, requires that no new oil gases fields be approved, nor any new coal mine or extensions to existing ones.”

However, in the CPA-EU session held this week in Maputo, Mozambique, the MPs from around the world voted to make changes in the resolution, to allow a global “just transition” to renewable energy.

The parliament in the new amendment as such “acknowledged the importance of fair phase out and gradual transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, stressing that the achieving the 1.5 ° C target requires the drastic scaling up of renewable energy and supporting a global just transition.”

The amendment was partly facilitated by the Ugandan Parliamentary delegation which was led by Deputy Speaker Hon Thomas Tayebwa.

Hon Tayebwa said, while announcing the good news today, that the Ugandan MPs “burnt the mid night candle” lobbying for the amendment.

The amendment, Tayebwa says was tabled on the floor on Wednesday by Tanzanian Deputy Speaker Hon. Musa Azzan Zungu and Hon. Edmund Hinkson of Barbados.

Hon Tayebwa described the vote as a “big win for EACOP”.

It comes nearly two months after the European Union Parliament passed a resolution on “violations of human rights in Uganda and Tanzania linked to investments in fossil fuels projects” in which they called for the suspension of the pipeline project in Uganda and Tanzania.

The EU decision was widely condemned by Uganda and Tanzania as “imperialist” and unfounded.

TotalEnergies, one of the oil companies in Uganda also protested the resolution which they said was passed without giving them audience.

Yesterday, Hon Tayebwa, revealed that the Ugandan MPs “held a fruitful engagement with EU MPs on issues of climate change and also registered our disappointment with their recent unilateral resolution on EACOP”
