E-Learning will Reduce Overcrowding in Lecture rooms - Nawangwe
chimpreports.com, September 21, 2022 | Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University has said online education will help the University in curbing down the problem of overcrowding in lecture Rooms.

Nawangwe believes that online is the only way the University will easily achieve its strategic goals which include among others becoming the research led University.
“Online education will help us to address the issue of high population. We are reducing under graduate numbers physically but we must put measures in place for online,” he said.
Nawangwe made these remarks during the launch of the partnership between the University and Master Card Foundation on online learning on Tuesday.
In the partnership, Master Card Foundation has boosted the University’s E-learning with $2Bn which will help in among others supporting in the establishment of five smart classrooms.
“Under the Master Card program, we have been able to train 15 people, this is a very big opportunity for us because lecturers will use these classrooms to conduct live classrooms or record lectures and distribute them through the internet,’’ he said.
The project, he added, will last for 18 months and this will begin in the next academic year.
“I was voted the best educationist in Africa because of Online Education. I am so proud of Makerere University staff, we were ready to go online. Our staff said, “Yes”, this is the way to go. We even examined ONLINE,” he said.
While officiating the launch, Prof. Mary Okwakol, the Executive Director, the National Council of Higher Education applauded Makerere for launching Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program E-learning Initiative, a project she said is at the heart of the National Council for Higher Education Directorate For ICT Support.
“Online learning facilities teach the teachers to think differently and critically. Mastering this skill will set you apart as an employee,” she said.
“E-learning is both flexible & convenient. Examination monitoring needs to be strengthened and challenges to PWDs addressed. NCHE mandates that institutions have both facilities and personnel to conduct online exams,” she added.

Different College Principals who attended the launch, pledged to implement the E-learning in their schools.
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Ezra Suruma said, “I look forward to Makerere being involved in applied research from the policy lab and the Innovation hub that is actually impactful to the lives and welfare of Ugandans.”
“As we sign this partnership, I hope this will set the ball rolling for innovative program for society transformation in the next 100 years of Makerere University. When I was in the Office of the Prime Minister, we focused so much on the problem of Implementation,” he added.
Reetah Roy, CEO and President of the Mastercard Foundation said, “This is what the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is all about.”
